Chicago weekend shootings: 7 dead, 20 hurt
CHICAGO (CBS) – At least seven people were killed, and 20 others were wounded in weekend shootings across the city as of Sunday. The ages of the victims range from 13 to 61.
In the first shooting of the weekend, a 39-year-old man was struck by gunfire while on the sidewalk in East Garfield Park Friday evening.
Police say around 5:40 p.m. Friday, the victim was approached by an unknown suspect, in the 3300 block of West Harrison Street, who produced a firearm and fired shots.
The victim was shot in the abdomen and taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital in critical condition.
Later in the evening around 7:23 p.m. Friday, in the 5200 block of South Halsted Street in Back of the Yards, a 61-year-old man and a 16-year-old boy were on the street when they both were shot by an unknown suspect.
The man was shot in the head and was taken to the University of Chicago Hospital in critical condition. He was later pronounced dead. The boy was shot in the right leg and was taken to Comer Children's Hospital in good condition.
A 30-year-old man was shot on the sidewalk around 8:30 p.m. Friday, in the 6700 block of South May Street in Englewood.
The victim told police five unknown men approached him and began shooting.
The victim suffered a gunshot wound to the abdomen and right shoulder and was taken by Chicago Fire Department to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition. The victim was very uncooperative and refused to answer any questions about the incident.
In other shootings from 5 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday:
- At 10:59 p.m. Friday, in the 3800 block of West 47th Street, a 29-year-old man was driving westbound on 47th Street when he heard shots and felt pain. The victim sustained a gunshot wound to the chest and was taken to Mt Sinai Hospital in critical condition.
- At 12:30 a.m. Saturday, in the 12400 block of South Halsted Street, a 19-year-old woman was walking on the sidewalk when an unknown suspect in a blue Dodge Charger approached alongside and began shooting toward her. The victim ran to a nearby business where she collapsed. The victim sustained a gunshot wound to the head and was taken by CFD to Advocate Christ Medical Center in critical condition.
- At 1:11 a.m. Saturday, in the 5000 block of South Archer Avenue, a man, 35, was driving in his car when a black Dodge Ram approached and someone unknown fired multiple shots from the vehicle. The victim suffered a graze wound to the left calf and refused medical attention on the scene.
- At 2:43 a.m. Saturday, in the 2700 block of South State Street, a 30-year-old man was standing in the residential lobby of an apartment building when he was in an argument with an unknown man who produced a handgun and fired shots The victim was shot in the left side of the torso and was taken to Northwestern Hospital in critical condition where he was pronounced dead a short time later.
- At 6:43 a.m. Saturday, in the 300 block of West 95th Street, a 52-year-old man was struck multiple times in the body by gunfire. he was transported to Advocate Christ in critical condition. The circumstances surrounding this incident are being investigated by Area Two detectives.
- At 5:30 p.m. Saturday, In the 1800 block of West Washington, a 15-year-old boy was on the street when he was shot in the left arm by an unknown suspect. The victim was taken to Stroger Hospital in good condition.
- At 5:54 p.m. Saturday, in the 6400 block of South King Drive, two teenage boys, 16 and 17, were on the street when they both were shot an unknown gunman. The 17-year-old was shot in the chest and was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition and was later pronounced dead. The 16-year-old was shot in the right arm and also taken to U of C in good condition.
- At 7:10 p.m. Saturday, in the 3300 block of West Potomac Avenue, a 40-year-old man and a 13-year-old boy were walking into a residential building when they both were shot by an unknown suspect. The man was shot in the right arm and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition. The boy was shot in the right leg and was taken to Norwegian Hospital in good condition.
- At 7:26 p.m. Saturday, in the 9900 block of South Princeton Avenue, a 21-year-old man was on the sidewalk when an unknown car approached. An unknown suspect from inside the car produced a firearm and fired shots at the victim - striking him in the right leg. The victim was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in good condition.
- At 8:45 p.m., in the 8800 block of South Princeton Avenue, a man in his 30s was inside a residence in the basement at a gathering when an unknown suspect fired shots. The victim was shot multiple times in the chest and body and was pronounced dead on the scene. Multiple shell casings are being recovered and the suspect fled the scene.
- At 10:50 p.m., unknown location, a man, 25, walked into the hospital with a gunshot wound to the back right side of the flank and is in critical condition. It is unknown where the incident occurred at this time and the victim was pronounced dead a short time later.
- At 11:51 p.m., in the 5100 block of West Roosevelt Road, A man, 22, was driving westbound when an unknown car approached and someone inside fired multiple shots toward him. The victim was shot in the left hip and right shoulder and drove himself to Mt Sinai Hospital in good condition.
- At 1:04 a.m. Sunday, in the 1000 block of West 14th Street, officers responded to a person shot in the area and found a 33-year-old man sitting in the passenger seat unresponsive. The victim was shot in the back of the head and was taken to Stroger in critical condition. An anonymous witness related to officers that two unknown men were observed running from the location of the shooting to a black Infiniti truck and through unknown objects from inside. Two handguns were recovered.
- At 3:10 a.m. Sunday, in the 2400 block of West Fillmore, a man, 22, walked into Weiss Hospital with a gunshot wound to the left index finger. The victim was very uncooperative with police about the incident and refused to answer any questions.
- At 3:05 a.m. Sunday, in the 0-100 block of W Hubbard Street, three men, ages 22, 26, and 32 were standing outside when they were struck by gunfire from two passing cars. All three victims were transported to Northwestern Hospital. The 22-year-old and 26-year-old suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the body and are in critical condition. The 32-year-old suffered two gunshot wounds to the left arm and is in stable condition.
- At 4:53 p.m. Sunday, a man was found in a residence in the 7900 block of South Marquette Avenue in South Shore with a gunshot wound to his head. He was pronounced dead on the scene.
- At 7:37 p.m. Sunday, a 25-year-old man was in a car in the 600 block of West 128th Place in West Pullman when he was shot in the leg. The man was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in good condition.
- At 7:50 p.m. Sunday, a 17-year-old girl was a passenger in a vehicle in the 1300 block of West 49th Street in Back of the Yards when shots were fired. The girl was driven to the University of Illinois Chicago medical Center by a family member, and was transferred to Stroger Hospital of Cook County in serious condition with gunshot wounds to the back and armpit.
- At 7:52 p.m. Sunday, a 36-year-old man was standing on the sidewalk in the 12300 block of South Union Avenue in West Pullman, when a black hatchback sport-utility vehicle went by and someone fired shots. The victim was shot multiple times and later died.
