Chicago Weekend Shootings: 5 dead, 39 hurt

CHICAGO (CBS) – At least five people are dead, and 39 others are hurt in weekend shootings as of Saturday. The ages of the victims range from 16 to 61.

In the first shooting of the weekend, a 19-year-old man was outside Friday around 7:40 p.m., in the 5000 block of South Kildare Avenue in Archer Heights, when he heard shots fired and felt pain. He was taken to Mt. Sinai in fair condition.

Further investigation showed the victim was shot at by an unidentified suspect who fled the scene on foot.

An 18-year-old man was also shot while standing on the sidewalk around 7:50 p.m., in the 5900 block of South Whipple Street in Chicago Lawn, when he was shot in the leg by an unknown suspect.

The victim was taken to Holy Cross Hospital in good condition. 

Ten minutes later, a 26-year-old man was shot while exiting his vehicle, in the 1700 block of South Maple around 8 p.m., when he heard shots fired and felt pain.

The victim returned to his vehicle and fled the scene. The victim came to a complete stop after crashing his vehicle approximately a block away at the entrance of an alley, according to police.

The victim was transported to Stroger Hospital with a gunshot wound to the leg in critical condition.

Later in the evening, a 61-year-old man was in a fight with another person around 10:18 p.m., in the 2600 block of West Luther Street, when both parties produced handguns and the suspect shot the victim one time.

The victim, identified as 61-year-old Jeronimo Lenin by the Medical Examiner's Office, was shot in the head and taken to Mt Sinai Hospital in critical condition where he was pronounced dead a short time later. A handgun was recovered on the scene.

Three people were shot around 7 p.m. Saturday evening in the 7100 block of South Prairie, police say. The two men and one woman were sitting in a park when someone walked up and started shooting, striking the victims. A man of unknown age was shot in the back and transported to Advocate Christ Medical Center in good condition. A 40-year-old woman was shot in the leg. She was also transported to Christ in good condition. A 56-year-old man was also shot in the leg. He was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center in good condition. 

Just an hour later in the 7600 block of South Peoria around 8 p.m., one person was killed and two others were injured. A 28-year-old man was shot in the face and transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. An 18-year-old man was shot in the torso while getting out of a vehicle. He was transported to U of C in serious condition. And a 24-year-old woman was shot in the foot while driving in the area. She wa transported to Saint Bernard Hospital in good condition. 

At 2:36 p.m. Sunday in the 5000 block of West Adams, two teens were shot while they were outside in front of a home. Police say an unknown male walked up and shot at them, striking at 16-year-old boy in the left arm and another 16-year-old boy in the chest and back. The boy who was struck in the arm was transported to Stroger Hospital in good condition. The boy shot in the chest and back was transported to Stroger in critical condition. 

Two people were shot, one fatally, Sunday afternoon in the 6400 block of South Albany. According to Chicago Police, a 41-year-old man and a 66-year-old woman were standing on the corner when a gray Toyota drove by and someone inside started argying with the 41-year-old man. The person in the gun then shot from the vehicle, striking the 41-year-old man in the right side and chest. He was transported to Advocate Christ Medical Center but was later pronounced dead. The 66-uear=old woman was shot in the right eye and transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center in good condition. She was not the intended target. 

Two people were also shot Sunday evening during a road rage incident on DuSable Lake Shore Drive. According to police, the victims were driving north near the Museum Campus when a 2015 Nissan sedan cut them off in traffic. The victims beeped at the sedan, which then pulled up alongside the victims' vehicle. That's when someone inside the Nissan started shooting. A 37-year-old woman was shot in the neck. She was transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition. A 26-year-old man was grazed on the back but refused medical attention. 

In other shootings from 5 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday:

  • At 10:59 p.m. Friday, in the 5200 block of South Albany Avenue, police responded to a person shot and found a 44-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the leg. The victim was taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital in good condition. The victim was unable to provide details of the incident and there is no one in custody. 
  • At 2:28 a.m. Saturday, in the 7700 block of S. South Shore Drive, police responded to a person shot and found a 27-year-old man with multiple gunshot wounds to the arm and leg. The victim was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition. A second man, 28, was on the scene and was placed into custody. Preliminary investigation indicates that a fight ensued between the two men. During the altercation, a firearm was produced and discharged striking the 27-year-old man. The 28-year-old man suffered lacerations and was also transported to U of C in good condition.
  • At 3:20 a.m. Saturday, in the 1200 block of West 47th Street, police responded to a person shot and found a 39-year-old man who sustained a gunshot wound to the leg. The victim was transported to U of C in good condition. Further investigation revealed the victim was shot at by an unidentified man wearing a mask who fled the scene in a vehicle. 
  • At 3:38 a.m. Saturday, in the 7100 block of South Princeton Avenue, a 20-year-old woman was in an argument with a known suspect who produced a handgun and fired shots in the victim's direction - striking her in the chest and back. The victim self-transported to U of C in serious condition.
  • At 11:17 p.m. Saturday, in the 4600 block of West Erie Street, two men were in a verbal altercation with a known offender who produced a handgun and shot at a 44-year-old man, and then produced a knife and stabbed a 30-year-old man. The 44-year-old man was shot in the stomach and taken to Mt Sinai in critical condition. The 30-year-old man suffered two stab wounds to the back and a laceration to the left forearm and was also taken to Mt Sinai in good condition.
  • At 11:40 p.m. Saturday, in the 200 block of South Lavergne Avenue, a man, 34, was standing on the sidewalk when an unknown offender fired shots. The victim was shot in the left leg and self-transported to Stroger in good condition. The victim was very uncooperative with officers and refused to answer any questions about the incident. 
  • 11:59 p.m. Saturday, unknown location, a 29-year-old man self-transported to U of C with two gunshot wounds to the chest and left flank in critical condition. The victim was very uncooperative about the incident and is refusing to answer any questions about the incident.
  • At 12:01 a.m. Sunday, in the 7800 block of South Cornell Avenue, a man, 34, was driving when he heard shots and felt pain. The victim sustained a gunshot wound to the right shoulder and self-transported to Jackson Park Hospital in good condition. 
  • At 12:51 a.m. Sunday, in the 1500 block of South Keeler Avenue, a group of women were at a gathering when a black Jeep approached, and multiple unknown offenders got out with guns and began shooting towards the group. A total of nine women were struck by gunfire. A 21-year-old woman was shot in the face and taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital in critical condition where she died a short time later. A 28-year-old woman was shot eight times in the torso and was also taken to Mt. Sinai in critical condition. The third victim, 33, suffered a graze wound to the stomach and was taken to Mt Sinai Hospital in good condition. The fourth victim of unknown age was grazed in the right arm and taken to Mt. Sinai in good condition. The fifth victim, 28, suffered a gunshot wound to the right knee and was taken to Mt. Sinai in good condition. The sixth victim, 31, suffered a gunshot wound to the left leg and forearm and was taken to Stroger Hospital in good condition. The seventh victim, 30, suffered two gunshot wounds to the right shoulder and two to the right arm and was also taken to Stroger in good condition. The eighth victim, 24, was shot in the right wrist and was taken to Stroger in good condition. The ninth victim, 20, suffered a gunshot wound to the right thigh and was taken to Stroger in good condition.
  • At 12:56 a.m. Sunday, in the 2000 block of West 52nd Street, an 18-year-old man was walking on the sidewalk when he heard shots and felt pain. The victim suffered two gunshot wounds to the right hand and two to the right shoulder and was taken to U of C in good condition.
  • At 1:20 a.m. Sunday, in the 2200 block of South Pulaski Road, a man, 32, was walking on the sidewalk when an unknown offender began shooting towards him. The victim was shot in the left shoulder and taken to Stroger in good condition.
  • At 1:44 a.m. Sunday, in the 1300 block of West Devon Avenue, a man, 30, and a woman, 20, were walking on the sidewalk when a black sedan approached and someone unknown from inside the vehicle fired multiple shots. The man suffered ten gunshot wounds to the body and was taken to St Francis Hospital in critical condition where he was pronounced dead a short time later. The woman suffered a gunshot wound to the left leg and was also taken to St Francis in good condition.
  • At 3:50 a.m. Sunday, in the 100 block of North Laramie Avenue, a group of individuals were standing on the sidewalk when shots were fired by an unknown offender. A 34-year-old man suffered a gunshot wound to the left leg and was taken to Mt Sinai in good condition. A 29-year-old man suffered a gunshot wound to the right leg and was taken to Stroger in good condition. A third victim, a 37-year-old man, self-transported to Mt. Sinai with a gunshot wound to his right knee in good condition.
  • At 5 a.m. Sunday, in the 2900 block of South Wallace, a man, 21, was outside when an unknown offender approached him and began to fire shots in his direction. The victim was shot in his left leg and right foot. He was taken to Stroger in unknown condition.
  • At 8:27 a.m. Sunday, in an unknown location, a 20-year-old man self-transported to Northwestern Hospital with a gunshot wound to the right thigh. The victim did not know the location of where the shooting occurred, and the circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation. The victim was uncooperative with responding officers. 
  • At 1 p.m. Sunday in the 1700 block of West 18th Street, a 52-year-old man was walking down the street when a vehicle pulled up and three people got out and began beating up the victim. One pulled out a gun and shot the victim in the leg, stomach and buttock. He was transported to Stroger Hospital in good condition. 
  • At 1:50 p.m. Sunday in the 1500 block of West 73rd,, a 32-year-old man was walking down the block when an unknown person shot him in the left side and the hand. The victim was transported to Advocate Christ Medical Center in good condition.
