4 killed, 21 wounded in weekend shootings across Chicago

CHICAGO (CBS) -- At least four people died and 21 were wounded in weekend shootings across Chicago, according to information from the Chicago Police Department.  

One of those injured was a person shot while attempting to rob a jewelry store in the Loop Saturday morning. Police say a robber went into the business in the 0-100 block of North Wabash Avenue just before 11 a.m. However, an employee inside, who is a valid FOID card and concealed carry license holder, then shot the would-be robber. 

The attempted robber then fled from the scene. A short time later, a suspect was taken into custody. The suspect was hospitalized due to a gunshot wound and is reportedly stable, police say. No other injuries were reported, and charges are pending. 

On Sunday afternoon, a mass shooting on the city's North Side left one woman dead and another three people injured. Chicago Police say the shooting happened around 2 p.m. at Pottawattomie Park in the 7300 block of N. Rogers Avenue in Rogers Park. Police say two men and two women were injured. The victims range in age from 18 to 23. 

One of those victims was an 18-year-old woman who was killed. One victim was grazed, and another was shot in the hip. The fourth victim refused medical treatment but was still taken to the hospital. One of the victims ran to the firehouse and was taken to the hospital, police say. 

Just a few hours later, a mass shooting on the city's South Side left three dead, including a teen, and another person injured. 

Other shootings from 5 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday are listed below. It was described as a gruesome scene inside the home along the 8000 block of South Vincennes Avenue. Police say it happened just after 7:30 p.m. when four people were shot inside. 

One of those shot was a 14-year-old, who was rushed to Comer Children's Hospital and later pronounced dead. Two adults also died. Another person was rushed to the University of Chicago Medical Center and is expected to recover, police say.

  • At 10:15 p.m. in the 9100 block of South Loomis, a 37-year-old woman was standing inside a home when she was shot in the leg. Police say the investigation showed the shot came from outside the home and went through a window before striking the victim. She was transported to Little Company of Mary Medical Center, where she was listed in good condition. 

Saturday 

  • At 1:55 a.m. in the 5000 block of West Washington Street, a 23-year-old man was outside when someone in a white vehicle shot him twice in the arm. The victim was transported to Stroger Hospital, where he was listed in good condition. 
  • At 3:58 p.m. in the 2800 block of West Polk, a 65-year-old woman and a 67-year-old man were on the sidewalk when an unknown vehicle pulled up, and someone inside started shooting. The woman was shot in the arm and self-transported to Mount Sinai Hospital, where she was listed in good condition. The man was shot in the left leg and also self-transported to Mount Sinai, where he was listed in good condition. 
  • At 5:45 p.m. in the 8400 block of South Stony Island, a 38-year-old man was traveling in a vehicle when he was shot in the left arm by an unknown person. The victim self-transported to Jackson Park Hospital, where he was listed in good condition.
  •  At 9:32 p.m. in the 3100 block of West 64th Street, a man, 36, was walking on the sidewalk when he heard shots and felt pain. The victim was shot in the left leg and rear and was dropped off at Holy Cross Hospital in good condition.

Sunday

  • At 1:14 a.m. in the 0-100 block of East Grand Avenue, a 17-year-old boy was found in a room on the 18th floor at a hotel with a gunshot wound to the lower left abdomen. The victim was uncooperative and refused to answer any questions on scene and was taken to Northwestern Hospital in critical condition.
  • At 2 a.m. in the 5600 block of South Halsted Street, a 29-year-old man was walking on the sidewalk when he heard a loud noise and felt pain in his leg. The victim walked home and, several hours later, realized he had been shot. The victim suffered a graze wound to his left leg and self-transported himself to Stroger Hospital in good condition.
  • At noon in the 900 block of South Oakley Boulevard, a 35-year-old man, while inside his residence, sustained a self-inflicting gunshot wound to his left forearm. The victim self-transported to UIC Hospital in good condition.
  • At 5:53 p.m. in the 1400 block of North Clark Street, a 35-year-old man was traveling northbound when someone inside a dark-colored vehicle, which was also traveling north, shot in the victim's direction. The victim was shot in the chest and suffered a graze wound to the head. The shooter's vehicle then fled north on Clark Street. The victim was transported to Northwestern Hospital in serious condition. 
  • At 8:40 p.m. in the 1000 block of West 115th Street, a 22-year-old man was driving westbound when he was shot in the left forearm. The victim then drove himself to Roseland Hospital in good condition. 
  • At 9:57 p.m. in the 6900 block of South Paxton, officers found a 47-year-old man inside a vehicle. He was unresponsive with a gunshot wound to his neck. The victim was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition. A weapon was recovered on the scene. 

Unless otherwise noted, no one is in custody in any of the incidents listed above.
