5 killed, 26 wounded in Chicago Labor Day weekend shootings, police say

CHICAGO (CBS) — At least five people were killed, and 26 others were hurt in Chicago shootings across the city during the Labor Day weekend, according to Chicago police. 

The ages of the victims range from 16 to 58. 

Friday

In the first shooting of the weekend, A 16-year-old boy was shot while inside a park just before 8 p.m. in the 700 block of East 53rd Street.

Police say two unknown people approached the teen — one of them pulled out a firearm and shot the victim multiple times in his body.

He was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition. 

Less than an hour later, a carjacking led to a chase to where a woman was grazed by gunfire in South Chicago.

It happened in the 8100 block of South Escanaba Avenue around 8:13 p.m.

According to police, a man, 37, was standing next to his car when two unknown people approached, pulled out firearms, and demanded the vehicle.

After fleeing in the car, the victim, along with a woman, 41, followed in a separate vehicle. The offenders then fired shots at both victims — striking the woman in the right shoulder. She was taken to the University of Chicago in good condition.

The victim's car was recovered by responding officers in the 7900 block of South Escanaba Avenue, and both offenders were taken into custody. A firearm was recovered at the scene. 

A 31-year-old man was struck by gunfire in the 3100 block of West Taylor Street around 10 p.m. He was dropped off at Mt. Sinai in good condition with gunshot wounds to the chin and forearm.

It is unclear what led to the shooting. 

A woman was killed in a drive-by shooting while on a porch around 9:30 p.m. in the 11800 block of South Indiana Avenue in West Pullman.

The victim, 49, was with another man, 38, who was a concealed carry holder, who returned fire at the gunman inside a dark-colored SUV.

The woman was taken to Roseland Hospital in critical condition with gunshot wounds to the face and arm and later died. The CCL holder was not hurt, and a handgun was recovered at the scene.

Saturday 

  • At 12:13 a.m. in the 3900 block of West Ogden Avenue, a 58-year-old woman was inside a vehicle at a gathering when multiple gunshots were fired from an alley, striking her in the neck. The CFD arrived on the scene to treat the victim and took her to Mt. Sinai in critical condition and later died.     
  • At 12 a.m. in the 1100 block of North Keystone Avenue, a boy, 17, was walking on the sidewalk when shots were fired in the area, and he was struck. The victim was hit in the left leg and was taken to Humboldt Park Health in good condition.
  • At 3:10 a.m. in the 10000 block of South Michigan Avenue, a 34-year-old man was outside when he was approached by an unknown person. After a brief conversation, the offender began to fire shots in his direction. The victim was struck in his chest and self-transported to Roseland Hospital in fair condition. 
  • At 8:34 a.m. in the 2900 block of East 89th Street, a man was inside a stationary vehicle when an unknown person approached on foot and fired a shot in his direction. The victim suffered a gunshot wound to his chest and was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he died.   
  • At 3:08 p.m. in the 3400 block of West Douglas Boulevard, a 23-year-old man met someone to purchase an item through an online marketplace. The victim was then confronted by three unknown males, who pulled a gun and shot him in the leg and shoulder. The victim was transported to Advocate Christ Hospital in fair condition. 
  • At 7:02 p.m. in the 5100 block of South Ellsworth Drive, a 46-year-old woman was inside a park when she was approached by an unknown vehicle, and someone inside shot her in the thigh. She was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center in good condition. 

Sunday 

  • At 12:43 a.m. in the 4800 block of West Lexington Street, a 35-year-old man was standing outside when he was shot in the leg. The victim was taken to Mt. Sinai in fair condition. The victim was unable to provide details of the incident.
  • At 1:19 a.m. in the 1000 block of West Lake Street, a 34-year-old man was standing outside when he was shot at by an offender who was traveling in a gray sedan, according to a witness. The victim was struck in the head and was taken to Stroger Hospital in critical condition.
  • At 4:04 a.m. in the 3100 block of South Morgan Avenue, a 36-year-old was traveling in a vehicle when he was shot at by an unidentified offender who was traveling in a gray SUV. The victim was shot in the face and was taken to Stroger in critical condition. 
  • At 2:40 p.m. in the 400 block of West 61st Place, a 38-year-old woman got into an argument-turned-fight with an unknown person who pulled a gun and shot the woman in the arm. The victim was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center in fair condition. A firearm was recovered on the scene. A person of interest was taken into custody, and charges are pending. 
  • At 8:10 p.m. in the 4600 block of South Paulina, a 43-year-old man was near the sidewalk when he was approached by an unknown vehicle and someone inside shot him, striking him in the buttocks and leg. The victim was taken to The University of Chicago Medical Center in fair condition. 
  • At 7:24 p.m. in the 700 block of West 107th Street, a 58-year-old man was in a vehicle when he was appraoched by a man with a gun. The man shot at the 58-year-old man but struck a 63-year-old man who was walking nearby. The shooter then ran away. The shooting victim was struck in the groin and was transported to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where he was listed in fair condition. Officers arrested on eman in connection with the incident. 
  • At 9:42 p.m. in the 10-100 block of North Leclaire, a 33-year-old man was sitting in a parking vehicle when he was approached by a known male who shot him multiple times in the legs. The victim was transported to West Suburban Hospital, where he was listed in good condition. The shooter ran away from the scene.

Monday

  • At 12:15 a.m. in the 7800 block of South Oglesby, a 19-year-old man was walking outside, when someone in a red sedan shot him in the leg. The victim was taken to University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition.
  • At 12:54 a.m. in the 5600 block of South Marshfield, officers found a 34-year-old man shot outside the rear of a home. The victim was taken to University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition with a gunshot wound to the head.
  • At 1:05 a.m. in the 8300 block of South King Drive, a 35-year-old man got into an argument with another man, who pulled out a gun and shot him several times. The victim was taken to University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition.
  • At 3:15 a.m. in the 700 block of South Lavergne, a 24-year-old woman was standing outside, when she heard shots and felt pain. She was taken to West Suburban Medical Center in good condition with a gunshot wound to the arm.
  • At 3:47 a.m. in the 6900 block of North Glenwood, a 50-year-old man was standing outside, when someone shot him in the shoulder. The victim was taken to Ascension St. Francis Hospital in fair condition.
  • At 6:01 a.m. in the 4800 block of West Adams, a 26-year-old woman was standing outside with a group of people, when a black sedan pulled up and someone inside started shooting. The woman was shot in the leg, and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition.
  • At 5:01 p.m. in the 10700 block of South Indiana, a 38-year-old man was in the back yard, when someone walked up and shot him. The victim was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in critical condition.
  • At 5:04 p.m. in the 200 block of East 57th Street, a 35-year-old woman was driving east, when someone standing near the street started shooting. The victim was taken to Stroger Hospital in critical condition, and later was pronounced dead.
  • At 5:24 p.m. in the 12300 block of South Emerald Avenue, three men were shot. A 28-year-old man was shot multiple times, and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. A 23-year-old man was shot in the chest and buttocks, and was taken to Roseland Community Hospital in critical condition. A 26-year-old man was shot in the buttocks, and was taken to Ingalls Memorial Hospital in good condition.
  • At 8:19 p.m. in the 1300 block of North Rockwell, a 24-year-old man was standing outside, when someone in an SUV shot him in the arm and abdomen. The victim was taken to Stroger Hospital in critical condition.
  • At 8:38 p.m. in the 200 block of South Woodward, a 38-year-old man was standing on the sidewalk when a vehicle pulled up and someone inside started shooting. The victim was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition with gunshot wounds to the buttocks and ankle.

Tuesday

  • At 12:30 a.m. in the 2500 block of West Fitch Avenue, a 25-year-old woman was inside a home when she heard glass break from the window and realized she'd been shot. She was taken to Ascension St. Francis Hospital in fair condition with a gunshot wound to the back.
  • At 1:23 a.m. in the 1400 block of West 79th Street, a 36-year-old man was standing in a parking lot when he got into an argument with another man. The argument turned physical, and the other man pulled out a gun and shot the victim in the leg and groin. The victim was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in fair condition.
