6 dead, 25 wounded in Chicago weekend shootings, police say

CHICAGO (CBS) — At least six people were killed and 25 others were hurt in weekend shootings across the city as of Sunday. 

The ages of the victims range from 16 to 59, according to police. 

Friday 

In the first shooting on Friday, a Chicago police officer fired at a car wanted in a homicide in the Back of the Yards neighborhood just before 6 p.m. 

The officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle in the 1700 block of West 47th Street. While attempting to stop the suspect, an officer fired a shot, striking the vehicle. No one was struck by gunfire. 

The vehicle came to a stop, and the suspect fled from the vehicle but was taken into custody. An officer was taken to a local hospital for minor injuries and observation, but it's unclear how they were hurt. 

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is investigating the specifics of this incident, including the comprehensive use of force investigation, with the full cooperation of the Chicago Police Department.

The Officers involved will be placed on routine administrative duties for a minimum period of 30 days. 

Hours later, a 19-year-old man was standing in the street in the 4500 block of South Damen Avenue around 11:40 p.m. when he heard gunshots and felt pain.

He returned to a silver sedan, where he discovered he had been shot in the right shoulder. He was driven to Holy Cross Hospital and was last listed in good condition. 

In other shootings from 5 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday:

Saturday 

  • At 12:01 a.m. in the 400 block of East 71st Street, a 43-year-old- man was at a bus stop when an unknown person approached, and an argument ensued. The victim walked away from the person, at which time the victim heard gunshots and was struck in his left forearm. The victim was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in good condition.
  • At 12:29 a.m. in the 4500 block of South Champlain Avenue, a witness told police that a 28-year-old man was on the sidewalk when an unknown offender began shooting in the direction of the victim, striking him several times about the body. The offender proceeded to flee the scene. Fire officials arrived on the scene to treat the victim and took him to U of C hospital in critical condition, where he did.
  • At 4:40 a.m. in the 4700 block of West Polk Street, a man, 53, and a woman, 41, were outside when they heard shots and then felt pain. The man sustained was shot in his abdomen and was taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital in critical condition and later died. The woman was hit in her right ankle and was also taken to Mt. Sinai in good condition. It was later said that a third victim, a man, 33, was shot in his right foot and self-transported to Rush Hospital in good condition.
  • At 1:37 p.m. in the 2500 block of East 75th Street, a 49-year-old man was standing on the sidewalk when someone shot him in the right foot. The victim was taken to South Shore Hospital in good condition.
  • At 2:34 p.m. in the first block of South Lavergne, a gunman approached a man in his 30s and shot him in the neck and back. The victim was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he died.
  • At 6:40 p.m. in the 6200 block of South Halsted Street, a 20-year-old woman was in a car when shots were fired nearby, and a gunshot hit her. The victim was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in good condition.
  • At 6:51 p.m. in the 5600 block of South Throop, a 29-year-old woman was in a car when she heard gunshots and realized she'd been wounded. She drove herself to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where she was listed in good condition.
  • At 8:49 p.m. in the 1400 block of South Sawyer Avenue, a 28-year-old man was standing on the sidewalk when someone in a gray sedan fired shots. The victim was taken by fire crews to Mt. Sinai in good condition with a graze wound to the right leg.
  • At 9:20 p.m. in the 6700 block of South Loomis Boulevard, two boys, 17 and 16, were on a porch when an unknown people approached and fired gunshots before fleeing. The 17-year-old was struck in the stomach and back; he was taken by the fire crews to U of C hospital, where he died. The 16-year-old male sustained a gunshot wound to the chest. He was treated on scene by the CFD and transported to U of C hospital in good condition. 

Sunday

  • At 12:05 a.m. in the 4300 block of South Western Boulevard, a 21-year-old man was driving northbound in a gray sedan when a black sedan pulled up next to him, and someone fired a gunshot at the victim from the vehicle and fled the scene. The victim was shot in his left leg. He was treated by the fire crews and taken to Mt. Sinai in good condition.
  • At 1:08 a.m. in the 500 block of South Damen Avenue, a 21-year-old man was driving a white truck when there was a collision with a black truck. Someone from the black truck fired shots striking the 21-year-old driver from the white truck. The victim was shot in the head, shoulder, and cheek. He was treated by the fire crews and taken to Stroger in critical condition. The black truck fled the scene westbound. 
  • At 1:16 a.m., in the 1800 block of South Blue Island Avenue, Chicago police officers assigned to the Robbery Task Force heard multiple shots being fired in the area. The officers then encountered armed offenders, at which time both officers fired their weapons, striking one of them. A firearm was recovered at the scene. Responding officers began rendering aid to the offender, who was then taken to a local hospital, where he died. Two victims, a male and a female, were found inside a vehicle with multiple gunshot wounds in the area the shots were heard. Both victims were taken to local hospitals in critical condition. Further investigation revealed this offender was one of the people who fired shots at them. Two officers were taken to an area hospital for observation.  One officer suffered minor injuries. COPA is investigating the specifics of this incident, including the comprehensive use of force investigation, with the full cooperation of the Chicago Police Department. The officers involved will be placed on routine administrative duties for a minimum of 30 days.    
  • At 5:25 a.m. in the 3800 block of North Marshfield Avenue, a 40-year-old man was found unresponsive with a gunshot wound to his upper body after he struck two parked vehicles. He was taken to Illinois Masonic in critical condition. 
  • At 5:53 a.m. in the 3600 block of West Fifth Avenue, a 21-year-old man was found unresponsive with multiple gunshot wounds to his abdomen and lower part of the body. He was taken to Mt. Sinai in critical condition.
  • At 12:29 p.m., a man was standing on the sidewalk in the 7500 block of South Coles Avenue in South Shore, when someone came up with a gun and shot him. The shooter fled the scene, while the victim suffered a gunshot wound to the left thigh and was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in South Shore in good condition.
  • At 3 p.m. Sunday, a 28-year-old man was found lying unresponsive on the ground in the 3900 block of West Madison Street in West Garfield Park, with multiple gunshot wounds. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
  • At 3:16 p.m., a 17-year-old girl was standing in the street in the 6600 block of South Evans Avenue in Woodlawn, when someone in a vehicle pulled up and shot her. The teen was taken to the University of Chicago's Comer Children's Hospital in good condition with a gunshot wound to the left leg.
  • At 5:30 p.m., a 25-year-old man was in a car in the 3500 block of West Adams Street in East Garfield Park when someone shot him in the left shoulder. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition.
  • At 7:54 p.m., a 32-year-old man was walking in an alley behind the 11800 block of South Lafayette Avenue in West Pullman when a truck pulled up and someone inside shot him. The victim was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in good condition with a gunshot to the lower right leg.
  • At 8:40 p.m. in the 1100 block of North Keeler, a 16-year-old boy was standing outside, when three women pulled up in a silver sedan and started shooting. The victim was taken to Stroger Hospital in fair condition with a gunshot wound to the right hip.
  • At 9:12 p.m. in the 6400 block of North Maplewood, a 40-year-old man was near his car when he heard gunshots, and realized he'd been shot in the left leg. The victim was taken to Ascension St. Francis Hospital in good condition.
  • At 9:27 p.m. in the 11900 block of South Prairie, officers responding to a ShotSpotter alert found a 20-year-old man who had been shot multiple times. The victim was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in serious condition.
  • At 9:58 p.m. in the 4700 block of West Harrison, a 31-year-old man was a passenger in a car when he heard gunshots, and realized he'd been shot in the left buttock. The victim was taken to Stroger Hospital in good condition.
  • At 10:15 p.m. in the 7800 block of South Burnham, a 41-year-old man was walking on the sidewalk when someone shot him in the left leg. The victim was taken to University of Chicago Medical Center in fair condition.
  • At 11:45 p.m. in the 2100 block of West 68th Place, a 59-year-old man was sitting on a porch, when a group approached him, and one of them shot him in the chest. The victim was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in serious condition.

Sunday

  • At 1:01 a.m. in the 1000 block of East 92nd Street, police responding to a ShotSpotter alert found a 35-year-old man who had been shot multiple times in the face. He was taken to University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition.

Unless otherwise noted, no arrests were made.
