Chicago Weather Alert: Afternoon storms prompt tornado watch

Chicago Weather Alert: Tornado Watch until 10:00

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Storms this afternoon and evening could be severe producing damaging winds, large hail, a few tornadoes and flash flooding. Multiple rounds of rain remain in the forecast until about 7 p.m.

A flash flood warning is in effect until 4:30 p.m. for southeastern Cook County, southeastern DuPage County, and northwestern Will County.

A tornado watch has been issued through 10 p.m. for Boone, Cook, DeKalb, DuPage, Grundy, Kane, Kankakee, Lake, Lee, McHenry, Ogle, Will, and Winnebago counties in Illinois; and Jasper, Lake, Newton, and Proter counties in Indiana. 

There's a possibility for strong tornadoes late this afternoon into the evening, especially between Rockford and Chicago, and points northward along the Wisconsin state line.

We expect a rapid intensification of storm strength and coverage between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m., with severe storms arriving in the Fox Valley area in the western suburbs between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m., and in the city of Chicago between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m.

Along with a tornado threat, hail the size of golf balls and wind gusts of 70 mph or stronger will be possible through the evening. Flash Flooding is also possible, especially in Chicago.

Cloudy skies overnight with lows in the mid 60s.

Storm chances will remain in the forecast for Thursday and last through Monday.

With highs in the mid to upper 80s on Friday and Saturday, a few thunderstorms could be heavy.
