CPS Announces School Closings Due To Weather Following CTU Demands
UPDATE: CPS Announces Closings
(CBS) -- The Chicago Teachers Union were demanding that CPS close all schools due to the extreme cold that is forecast for Monday. CPS announced late Sunday afternoon that they would close schools on Monday.
Initially, CPS planned to open schools early and parents would not have to send their kids to class. It would have been considered an excused absence.
In a press release, CPS said, "After the CPS management team carefully evaluated the situation again today with city departments, it determined that cancelling classes was in the best interest of students."
According to the National Weather Service, the wind chill factor is expected to hit a low of -45 degrees.
Schools throughout the Chicago area have announced school closings for Monday, including Northwestern, DePaul and the University of Chicago.
