Temp Jobs Have Skyrocketed In Chicago In The Past Year
Unemployment continues to decline this year with companies hiring more often. The downside to the hiring is there's a noticeable rise in companies choosing temporary employees over permanent workers. The upside is it may be helping new job seekers, including college students, find their niche in the job market.
In August 2009, 1.7 million people were hired for temp jobs. In 2014, that number skyrocketed to 2.8 million, according to The Wall Street Journal.
Forbes reports that the average starting salary for 2013 college graduates with a bachelor's degree grew to $45K. The top jobs to get within the $40K to $50K salary base are in health sciences, business majors, computer science and engineering.
Service-related jobs, such as hotel management, also make an average wage of $51K, according to PayScale. Business-related jobs in financial analysis, leadership, budget management and team leaders are reported to be getting the highest salaries in hotel fields.
One suggestion from a local recruiter is to take a closer look at their resume and highlight consecutive work in your career field, even if it's just a school activity or an internship.
For college students who may not be sure what they want to do with their degree, temporary employment may be an ideal way to test the grounds.
One local Chicago recruiter knows first-hand how to get job seekers to pay more attention to job applicants' resumes. The recruiter suggested job seekers take a closer look at their own resumes and highlight consecutive work in their career fields, even if it's just a school activity or an internship. Highlighting these areas will show consistently and stability within their prospective job market.
