Showers, thunderstorms hit Chicago area as cold front moves through
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Showers and thunderstorms developed along a cold front as it moved through the area Monday night.
Severe thunderstorms were spotted early in the evening in DeKalb County, while video captured hail falling in Ogle County near Rockford. Wind gusts of up to 50 mph accompanied the storms.
As the evening went on, storms passed through and brought thunder, lightning, and pouring rain to communities around the area.
At 10 p.m., heavy rain was falling in downtown Chicago – accompanied by lightning. It was expected to be the first of several rounds of rain Monday night into Tuesday morning.
Meanwhile, late Monday evening, a tornado warning was issued for southeastern Henry and southwestern Bureau counties – far west of Chicago and north of Peoria. At 8:26 p.m., a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was spotted over Kewanee Municipal Airport, moving northeast at 30 mph.
On Monday night, no tornado warnings were issued anywhere closer than that to the Chicago area.
Rain remained scattered by 10 p.m. but was set to become widespread -- with a 100 percent chance of rain for the Chicago area. The rain will be widespread, mainly after midnight, though the severe weather threat after midnight is low.
Behind the front, drier and cooler weather arrives Tuesday through Thursday, with highs in the 40s and 50s.
Another system arrives late in the week, returning rain from Friday into Saturday.
Tonight: Showers/storms likely. Low around 40.
Tuesday: Showers before 8 a.m. Mostly cloudy, windy, and colder in the afternoon. Highs in the low 40s.
Wednesday: Clearing skies. Highs in the upper 40s.
