Chicago Police Officer, Offender Shot On West Side
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A Chicago police officer was shot Friday afternoon while responding to a drug deal in the West Garfield Park neighborhood.
The shooting happened during a traffic stop in the 4600 block of West Maypole Avenue. A source tells CBS 2 that the tactical officer was shot in the chest. His protective vest stopped the bullet and he was taken to Loyola Medical Center in stable condition.
According to sources, the officer was shot by a female who was participating in a drug deal. She was shot multiple times and is in critical condition at Stroger Hospital. A male suspect fled the scene.
A gun was recovered at the scene, police said.
"The vest saved the officer's life," Police Supt. Eddie Johnson said.
"Today we have seen gun violence hit home," said Loyola emergency room doctor, Kristen Donaldson, who is married to a Chicago police officer.
She said the bullet hit an area that likely would have been fatal if not for the ballistic vest.
"I don't ever want to receive the call this officer's family got today," Donaldson said. "Thankfully it was a good call."
"He's coming home tonight," she said.
A second officer sustained was transported to local hospital in good condition. Officials said the officer was suffering from anxiety from the vent.
Both officers later were released from the hospital.
Witnesses at the scene disagreed that anyone fired on the police officer, CBS 2's Dana Kozlov reports.
