Chicago police officer exchanges gunfire with man on Chicago's South Side

CHICAGO (CBS) -- An investigation is underway after a Chicago Police officer fired his gun in the direction of a man on the city's South Side. 

Officers responded to a gunshot detection alert near 8500 South Winchester Avenue around 11:23 Thursday night and saw the man standing a short distance away when they got there. 

Police say as officers tried to talk with the man, they "observed flashes of light and heard loud noises from where the individual was standing." 

One of the officers then shot in the direction of the person. 

No injuries were reported and the Investigative Response Team is investigating. 

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is handing the comprehensive use of force investigation, and the officers involved will be placed on routine administrative duties for 30 days. 

The Chicago Police Department previously said there was an exchange of gunfire between officers and the person on the scene after the "unknown male who fired shots in the direction of the officers." 

The unknown person fled the scene.
