30-year-old man charged in carjacking, car crash near Lakefront Trail and battery
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A man involved in a carjacking who later went on to beat a passerby and a wild ride on June 7 has been charged.
Deshawn Singleton, 30, of Chicago has been charged with vehicular hijacking, aggravated battery among other felony charges. He is expected in bond court on Thursday.
As CBS 2's Shardaa Gray reported, it was a a wild carjacking, even by Chicago standards, in part because of where it ended, just feet from Lake Michigan but started just two blocks from Chicago police Headquarters.
Chicago police said a 40-year-old woman was in her parked car in the 3500 block of South State Street this morning around 8:40 when a man, identified as Singleton, got in the passenger side, showed a gun and told her to get out.
Singleton traveled northbound in her SUV when he later crashed the car in the 5100 block of S. Lakeshore Drive. He drove onto the Lakefront Trail, nearly going into Lake Michigan. According to the Chicago Police Department (CPD) he got out of the car and tried to get away.
"There's so much hatred out here."
Tara Jones lives in the Hyde Park neighborhood. She got a notification on the Citizen's app Tuesday morning, seeing a video on her phone.
"We've come to sad place lately. No one giving a care about their life or someone else's life for material things," Jones said.
According to CPD, Singleton didn't stop there. He got out of the car and tried to get away. Police said he went on to beat a 26-year-old man, who was later taken to University of Chicago in fair condition.
Police said Singleton then tried to carjack another driver, but police say he was unsuccessful. He was placed in police custody and taken to University of Chicago Hospital for the injuries he suffered in the car crash.
