Chicago Native Townsend Eliminated At French Open
(CBS) After capturing the tennis world's attention with a second-round upset, 18-year-old Chicago native Taylor Townsend's run is over at the French Open.
Townsend fell 6-2, 6-2 to Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain in the third round Friday morning. From the city's Englewood neighborhood, Townsend -- ranked 205th on the tour -- had draw notoriety with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 upset of 20th-ranked Alize Cornet of France in the second round to become the youngest American woman to reach the French Open's third round since 2003.
On Friday, Townsend fell in a hole right away, as Navarro broke her first to serves to grab an early 4-0 lead in the first set. Townsend worked back to trail 4-2, but her aggressiveness proved to be her undoing. Townsend had 33 unforced errors, while Navarro had just seven. Townsend also won just 48 percent of her first-serve points.
