(CBS) -- A Chicago man has been charged with kidnapping two kids and engaging in a standoff with police on Cicero Avenue Monday afternoon.

Charles Esaw, 40, has been charged with aggravated kidnapping, aggravated domestic battery, aggravated fleeing and eluding and unlawful restraint, according to the Cook County State's Attorney's office

Police say they received a call from a woman Monday afternoon saying that she and her two children and two dogs were being held by the Esaw, who was dating the woman, in the cab of a semi-truck in the 6500 block of 73rd Street in Bedford Park.

Police say Esaw tried to hit officers with the truck and then led them on a short chase which ended at the 4400 block of Cicero Ave. in Chicago. The woman managed to escape prior to the chase.

Esaw was persuaded by police to release the two children and two dogs before he exited the vehicle without incident, according to police. Both of the children and the two dogs were unharmed.

Bond for Esaw was set at $250k in a court appearance Tuesday.
