Chicago man charged in deadly August 2023 shooting in Logan Square

CHICAGO (CBS) — A man was charged in connection with the deadly shooting of a 19-year-old man in Logan Square last year.

Carmelo Aviles, 40, was arrested and charged with one felony count of first-degree murder and four felony counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm.

Chicago police said on Aug. 20, 2023, around 2:44 a.m., Aviles opened fire into a vehicle, killing the 19-year-old in the 3400 block of West Fullerton Avenue.

During this incident, four additional people were inside the vehicle but were not hurt. 

The offender was placed into custody and subsequently charged accordingly, police said. 

Aviles is scheduled to appear at a detention hearing on Saturday.

No further information was immediately available.
