Man stabbed inside Ross department store in Chicago's Loop

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A man is hospitalized in fair condition after he was stabbed inside a retail store in the Loop, according to the Chicago Police Department.

Police say the 26-year-old man was inside the Ross Dress for Less in the 0-100 block of East Randolph Street just before 3 p.m. when he got into an argument with an unknown male.

That man then stabbed the 26-year-old victim in the stomach and the back.

It all happened in plain sight of shoppers who told CBS 2 they don't understand why this happened.

"It was really fast, you know?" said Mario Cadena.

He said he saw two young men talking with someone who appeared to be a store employee before the older man was stabbed, and at least one suspect ran off.

"At that moment, I thought that it was just two kids fighting for some clothes or something like that," Cadena said.

Last weekend, a 15-year-old was stabbed near Dearborn Avenue and Lake Street. Police say that, at the time, the boy was walking along the street and was approached by four males. Two of them took out knives and stabbed the teen in the neck. It appeared to be a robbery. A witness told CBS 2 that a good Samaritan jumped into action using a ripped t-shirt to put pressure on the stab wound until first responders arrived, likely saving his life. At least one knife was found at the scene.

Though police initially detained one person in the Ross incident, that person told CBS 2 it was a misunderstanding and he was let go.

The stabbing suspect is still at large.

"I didn't feel in danger," said Cadena.

The victim was transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in fair condition, police say.

No one is in custody as Area Three detectives investigate.

The store closed following the incident.

No further information was immediately available.
