Chicago Hosts Police Summit On Crime Strategies

(CBS) -- Chicago welcomed top police officials from nearly a dozen major cities on Wednesday for a summit on national trends in crime.

The meeting at the University of Chicago comes two days after the deadliest day of shootings in Chicago in 13 years. Nine people were killed across the city on Monday. Chicago had not seen that many homicides in a single day since July 5, 2003, when 10 people were slain.

The University of Chicago Crime Lab was hosting the all-day summit on Wednesday. For security reasons, since federal law enforcement officials and leaders from police departments across the U.S. are attending, the exact location of the meeting has not been disclosed.

In today's climate, with a growing number of violent crimes and greater distrust in police, officials said the summit is crucial to discuss new crime fighting strategies.

At the meeting, officials will discuss national trends in crime, and potential new strategies for reducing crime.
