Chicago shooting: man wounded during argument at Wrightwood gas station
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A man was wounded in a shooting Wednesday morning at a gas station in the Southwest Side's Wrightwood neighborhood.
As CBS 2's Darius Johnson reported, police had the Falcon Fuel station at 79th Street and Western Avenue taped off for five hours as they processed the scene.
We have learned the victim, a 37-year-old man, was on the way to work when the incident happened shortly before 9 a.m.
Police initially said someone got out of another car at the gas station and approached the victim. The two got into a quarrel, and the suspect fired shots at the man, who suffered gunshot wounds throughout the body, police said.
Surveillance video showed the moments it all played out. It shows two vehicles – a white Cadillac and a silver Nissan – pulling into the Falcon Fuel station at the exact same time.
Both men are seen getting out of their vehicles. The man who had been driving the white Cadillac pulls out a tire iron and swings, while the man in the silver Nissan pulls out a handgun and fires shots – striking the man with the tire iron multiple times.
According to police radio traffic, it appears it was a Good Samaritan who took the man to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where his condition was stabilized.
Johnson spoke Wednesday afternoon to the victim's employer. At the time, they told Johnson the victim was in surgery and was expected to recover.
Meanwhile, as police taped off the gas station for hours, the community showed up. Bilaal Evans of the Restorative Project said he comes across nearly a dozne crime scenes – day after day.
"The reality is that we live in a society of violence, and so everything is starting to be handled with an instantaneous act of aggression," said Evans. "You know, no one wants to talk it out. No one wants to work it out."
There were no arrests late Wednesday. It remained unclear what happened before the two pulled into the parking lot of the gas station.
