Chicago-Bound Amtrak Train Fatally Strikes Teen Near Washington, D.C.

BOYDS, Md. (AP) -- Police and fire officials say an Amtrak train struck and killed a teenage boy who was on the tracks in Maryland north of Washington. Rail service was halted in the area for hours.

Montgomery County Police say 16-year-old John Martin DeReggi Jr. of Boyds was hit about 4:45 p.m. Monday in Boyds, a town about 20 miles north of the nation's capital.

Officers say DeReggi and two other teenagers were walking along the tracks, when, for reason not know, DeReggi went onto the tracks and into the path of the train. The incident is under investigation.

Amtrak spokesman Marc Magliari tells The Washington Post that the train, carrying some 200 passengers, was traveling from Washington to Chicago.
