Chicago Bike Cops Save Life Of Mag Mile Tourist
CHICAGO (STMW) -- Two Chicago Police officers on bike patrol are being credited with saving an elderly tourist's life along the Magnificent Mile Tuesday afternoon.
About 2:20 p.m., the two officers were on patrol when they were flagged down near Michigan Avenue and Walton Street, according to a statement from Chicago Police. Citizens led them to a man "drained of color" lying on the ground and not breathing.
The officers began performing chest compressions and saw the 75-year-old man's airway was blocked, which they were able to clear, police said.
The Chicago Fire Department took the man to Northwestern Memorial Hospital and his condition has stabilized, police said. He was visiting Chicago from Columbus, Georgia.
The officers later learned he "had a life-threatening medical emergency." The two officers who came to his aid were 11-year and 13-year veterans of the Chicago Police Department, the statement said.
