CHICAGO (CBS)-- The Chicago Bears are working towards a deal to hire Shane Waldron as their new offensive coordinator, according to the NFL Network.

Waldron, 44, spent three seasons as the Seahawks' offensive coordinator. He also served as an assistant coach for the Los Angeles Rams and New England Patriots.

His tenure in Seattle included the 2022 season when he coached quarterback Geno Smith to a career-best season in which the then eight-year veteran led the league in completion percentage and won Comeback Player of the Year.

Waldron's record could bode well if the Bears keep Justin Fields for a fourth season. The new offensive coordinator might get the opportunity to work with a new quarterback as the Bears have the first overall pick in this year's NFL Draft.

The Bears fired Luke Getsy as their offensive coordinator earlier this month, along with quarterbacks coach Andrew Janocko, wide receivers coach Tyke Tolbert, running backs coach Omar Young, and assistant tight ends coach Tim Zetts.

The moves marked the Bears' most drastic offensive staffing changes since 2022 when Matt Eberflus took over as head coach.

The Bears interviewed nine candidates for the offensive coordinator opening.
