Chicago-Area Ukrainians Call On Consul General To Resign
CHICAGO (CBS) --About 200 Ukrainian-Americans demonstrated at the consulate in River North.
The crowd shouted, "Resign right now," demanding the resignation of Ukraine's consul general in Chicago.
He emerged for a few minutes to talk to the demonstrators on his front step - and made some remarks in Ukrainian - remarks that were drowned out by the crowd's chants. Then he went inside. This man told us what he said.
"He's not about to resign. He feels that his position here helps the Ukrainian citizens who are in trouble - have legal problems - so he's accountable to his government to help these people."
"Shame on you," the crowd shouted.
The 150,000 Ukrainians in the Chicago area have found a friend in Congressman Bobby Rush - who has been absent from Washington for the better part of five months because of his wife's illness.
And he told the protesters in front of the consulate that his wife's doctor asked him to lend his support to the Ukrainian people.
"When I get back to Washington next week, I'm going to pressure the government, I'm going to pressure the administration. We call for sanctions."
