Cary-Grove High School Student Diagnosed With Meningitis
(CBS) -- A Cary-Grove High School student has a confirmed case of bacterial meningitis.
While parents should be concerned, there's no reason to panic, says Susan Karras of the McHenry County Health Department.
"It's not common, but when it happens it's very serious and it can cause death," she says.
Karras says officials have already identified peers who have had contact with the student and they have prescribed antibiotics as a precaution. She also says it will be mandatory starting next year for students to show proof they have been vaccinated for meningitis if they are entering sixth or 12th grade.
Symptoms of meningitis include headache, neck stiffness and, in some cases, rash.
