At least 7 armed carjackings reported across the city in 24 hours

CHICAGO (CBS)-- Police are alerting residents in multiple neighborhoods across the city after a string of carjackings earlier this week.

In at least one case, a suspect shot at a victim trying to get away.

There have been at least seven carjackings reported within 24 hours.

The suspects demand people's car at gunpoint before speeding off.

The first carjacking took place near Diversey Parkway and Clybourn Avenue around 11 p.m. The incidents continued into the early morning hours Tuesday.

The suspects moved further north where they carjacked four others within three hours. The crew was back Tuesday night when they targeted a woman near her home in Lincoln Park.

Neighbors in the area were calling for solutions.

"I think this neighborhood feels like we want to get involved," said Samantha Skjodt. "We want to help. What can we do? How can we assist? We don't want to see this get worse."

Chicago police warn of string of carjackings on North Side

The last carjacking happening here on north Western Avenue Tuesday night only 25 minutes after the crew hit Lincoln Park. Police say the men were seen getting out of a black sedan at times. Police said the suspects were also seen using a red Kia and black Toyota SUV.

Another of the carjackings took place around 6:30 on Tuesday morning right near the Chicago Math and Science Academy Charter School, shortly before classes began, as CBS 2's Shardaa Gray reported. Students and staff said they were anxious after the incident.

"We have 600 kids here," said Ken Johnson, an assistant principal at the school. "We have families that live within blocks of here. We're all concerned with the crime."

Johnson added he's particularly concerned for students who are new drivers.

"We've got driver's ed classes and we're putting kids in their cars on the street," he said. "And it's just another thing that we have to talk to them about."

Police say they're looking for four men in their late teens or early 20s. All of them were wearing masks.
