3 children, 2 adults injured in car, bicycle crash in Chicago's Rogers Park neighborhood
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A wild crash involving two cars and at least one bicycle sent five people to the hospital in the Rogers Park community Wednesday night—some of them kids.
The crash happened at 6:36 p.m. on Jonquil Terrace at Marshfield Avenue in the North of Howard section of Rogers Park. Police said a speeding car hit a blue Nissan and a 13-year-old boy on a bicycle.
Ald. Maria Hadden (49th) described it as a case of reckless driving.
Hadden said on Facebook Live from the scene that the offending driver had been speeding up an alley from Howard Street. She said there was a family inside the blue car that the speeding car hit.
At 10 p.m. Wednesday, the scene remained active—with police investigating and debris scattered everywhere.
"It's just like not a thing that you expect to see happen," said neighbor Laura Friedrick.
The blue Nissan that the family had been inside rolled over in the crash, and was left lying on its side diagonally in an alley. A lighter blue car was up on the parkway and sidewalk in front of an apartment building nearby.
A wrecked, crushed bicycle was seen next to the second car. The metal gates in front of the apartment building were also damaged, and belongings were scattered everywhere.
"I heard basically an explosion or something like it, and then there was a kid who was screaming," said Friedrick. "He seemed to be more panicked than anything."
Police said two adults in their 40s and two children ages 10 and 7, were taken to area hospitals—as was the 13-year-old boy who had been on the bicycle.
The Chicago Fire Department said the children were Lurie Children's Hospital and Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, while the adults were taken to Ascension St. Francis Hospital in Evanston.
"Everyone is alive," Hadden said. They're receiving medical treatment. They were able to get the family out and to the hospital."
It was a concerning incident for neighbors.
"There's a decent number of kids who ride bikes and stuff. People ride bikes up here a lot. There's like a bike shop that's right around the corner," said Friedrick. "We're right next to two schools, so kids hang out here a lot."
Late Wednesday, there had been no word on any arrests in the incident.
