Cannabis Product May Help Your Ailing Pet, Veterinarian Says

(CBS) -- We've heard about the benefits of medical marijuana for people, but what about pets?

Roseanne Tellez reports CBD -- found in cannabis and hemp -- is showing promise in treating pets.

Amy Barnes' dog Milo is tugging at his leash, happy to be out for a walk. That is a big turnaround from six weeks ago, when the animal was having seizures and had trouble moving around.

Barnes' vet recommended Cannabinoids – one of the active ingredients found in cannabis and hemp. Barnes sprinkled capsule on Milos food every day and says his recovery was remarkable.

Dr. Barbara Royal uses CBD to treat dogs and cats with a wide range of ailments, from allergies to diabetes to cancer. It's effective as an anti-inflammatory, she says.

It sometimes raises eyebrows.

"People say, 'Are you talking about getting my dog stoned?'" Royal says. "I'm not talking about that. There's a THC component to marijuana that is way too strong and toxic in pets."

Barnes says it worked for Milo.

Dr. Royal cautions that any pet owner considering the treatment for their pet should consult with a veterinarian about dosages.
