Candidate Asks: How Could Emanuel Bodyguards Have Missed Attack On Mayor's Son?
(CBS) -- Questions are being raised following the robbery of Mayor Emanuel's son just outside the family's North side home—and why police protecting the house did not stop it.
CBS 2's Derrick Blakley reports.
It happened Friday night, across the street and two houses down Mayor Emanuel's home.
His 17-year-old son, Zachary, on his way home, was jumped by two attackers who took his cellphone and left him with cuts and bruises.
The mayor's home on Hermitage Avenue is protected 24/7 by an unmarked police car from the 19th District. So, why didn't officers see it and stop it?
That's exactly what mayoral candidate Bob Fioretti wants to know.
"I know there's more police officers around that home than around Mayor Daley's townhome, when it was in the 2nd Ward when he lived in the 2nd Ward," says Fioretti, who represents that ward on the City Council.
The home also is watched by a security camera at the corner of Hermitage and Bertau. Fioretti wondes whether police dropped the ball or whether the whole story is known.
"This is a serious situation," he said Monday. "I don't think we ever know the complete story until we get the complete story."
In a statement issued Monday, the Chicago Police Department said the attack occurred "down the block and out of view of police officers" stationed outside the Emanuel home.
Earlier, a City Hall spokesperson told CBS 2 the mayor is convinced his son told the whole story.
Zach Emanuel was shaken up but did accompany his family to Chile, where they're now spending their annual holiday vacation.
