California Blue Line Station Closed For Six Weeks
CHICAGO (CBS) -- One of the oldest 'L' stations in the city has been shut down for six weeks, to undergo a major renovation.
WBBM Newsradio's Bob Roberts reports the California station in the Logan Square neighborhood closed at 1 a.m. Thursday. The CTA will install improved lighting, more turnstiles, and additional bike racks at the 109-year-old California stop on the O'Hare branch of the Blue Line. The station also will get new artwork and upgrades to the station house.
The station last underwent renovations in 1993.
To help inconvenienced riders, the CTA has beefed up bus service on the #56/Milwaukee route, which runs parallel to the Blue Line. A late night shuttle bus also will link the California stop to the adjacent Logan Square subway station and Western 'L' stop.
The California station will remain closed until Oct. 16, when renovations are scheduled to be complete.
Then, on Oct. 20, the Damen station on the Blue Line will close for nine weeks for similar renovations.
