Bulls' Derrick Rose Won't Attend USA Basketball Mini-Camp
(CBS) Bulls point guard Derrick Rose won't attend USA Basketball's mini-camp in Las Vegas that takes place next week, a notable development because managing director Jerry Colangelo has stated attendance is required for those who want to be considered for the 2016 Olympic team that will participate in Rio de Janeiro.
Bulls wing Jimmy Butler is one of the 34 players who will be in attendance for a camp that will be "low key with light workouts, no contact" and feature a basketball showcase that will be akin to an All-Star Game, Colangelo said. It runs from next Thursday through Saturday.
Rose played on Team USA's world championship team in 2010 and was on the squad that won the FIBA World Cup last September. He was on track to play for the 2012 Olympic team before tearing his left ACL that April in those playoffs.
This summer marked the first time Rose entered an offseason fully healthy since 2011. He tore the ACL at the end of the 2011'-12 season and sat out the entire 2013-'13 season as he recovered. In November 2013, he tore his right meniscus and sat out the rest of the year.
Former Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau continues to serve as an assistant coach to Mike Krzyzewski on the national team.
The full list of attendees is as follows: Butler, Harrison Barnes, Michael Carter-Williams, Mike Conley, Draymond Green, Tobias Harris, DeAndre Jordan, Victor Oladipo, LaMarcus Aldridge, Carmelo Anthony, Bradley Beal, DeMarcus Cousins, Stephen Curry, Anthony Davis, DeMar DeRozan, Andre Drummond, Kevin Durant, Kenneth Faried, Rudy Gay, Paul George, Blake Griffin, James Harden, Gordon Hayward, Dwight Howard, Kyrie Irving, LeBron James, Kawhi Leonard, Kevin Love, Chandler Parsons, Chris Paul, Mason Plumlee, Klay Thompson, John Wall and Russell Westbrook.
