Pilot Dead In Small Plane Crash Near Bartlett

(CBS) -- A pilot is dead in the crash of a single-engine plane in a DuPage County forest preserve.

The fatality was confirmed by the chief of the DuPage County Forest Preserve Police, Tom Wakolbinger.

Wakolbinger says he's told the 4-seater Cessna 172 fueled up in Schaumburg and crashed into a large open grass field in the forest preserve not far from Bartlett and just northeast of DuPage  Airport.

A nearby resident called Bartlett Police at about 3:50 p.m. reporting that she heard a loud crash and saw smoke in the area, officials said.

The plane reportedly had rudder problems before crashing Friday afternoon. Chopper 2 flew over the scene, which showed wreckage spread across a grassy area. Emergency officials were combing the site for debris.

Federal authorities are investigating.
