Bob Costas Drinks Vodka On Air, Then Gets Day Off Due To Eye Infection

(CBS) A day after drinking a shot of vodka on air and saying, "My eyes can't get any redder" in reference to his ongoing eye infection, NBC anchor Bob Costas will cede his Sochi Olympic primetime coverage duties Tuesday night to Matt Lauer in an effort to get over his eye issue, NBC announced.

Initially as the Olympics opened over the weekend, Costas' left eye was red and he worked through the issue, wearing eyeglasses that he normally doesn't come on air with. By Monday, the infection had spread to his right eye as well, and he decided to call Lauer in "from the bullpen," he said.

Lauer is the first person to take over for Costas in primetime since 1998.
