Blackhawks Sign GM Stan Bowman To 3-Year Extension

(CBS) Blackhawks general manager Stan Bowman has signed a three-year extension with the team, bringing his contract through the 2020-21 season.

Bowman is in his sixth season as general manager and 15th year with the Blackhawks. He's been in charge of three Stanley Cup championships during that span.

"I am proud of how much Stan and his staff have accomplished and have great confidence in his leadership as our organization continues to strive for consistent excellence," Blackhawks team president John McDonough said in a statement. "Under Stan's guidance, our Hockey Operations Department is strong across all levels, including scouting, player evaluation and development, and salary cap management. He has created a sound structure that Blackhawks fans can be excited about for many years to come."

It's worth noting that Bowman's contract now runs one year past coach Joel Quenneville's newly extended contract that goes through the 2019-'20 season.

Last season, Bowman reworked the Blackhawks' roster with a series of moves to help the team win its third championship since 2010. He then revamped it again to evade salary cap restrictions and rebuild this current team around its core.

The Blackhawks currently sit atop the Western Conference with 70 points in 52 games.
