Black McDonald’s Operators Association gives away turkeys in Chicago

CHICAGO (CBS) -- An organization is making sure thousands of local families and veterans in Chicago can celebrate Thanksgiving with all the fixin's.

The Black McDonald's Operators Association of Chicago is giving away 3,000 turkeys over the next week at McDonald's locations on the city's South and West sides, in an event called Food for the Body and Spirit.

This is the 24th year the giveaway has been held.

"It's a pleasure to see everybody here today. We're giving out turkeys. We're giving out bread. We gave out some doughnuts this morning," said Akins Aknnagbe of the Black McDonald's Operators Association, "and we can't wait to do this five other times at different locations."

Along with the turkeys, the organization gave away the usual sides—and a pair of gloves. The group also did a special VIP line for veterans.

The event on Thursday was held at the McDonald's at 5015 W. Madison St. in the South Austin neighborhood. On Friday, a turkey giveaway will be held at the McDonald's at 11 N. 1st Ave. in Maywood, and on Saturday at the McDonald's at 19767 S. Halsted St. in Chicago Heights.

On Monday for Veterans Day, a giveaway will be held at the McDonald's at 740 E. 47th St. in the Bronzeville neighborhood, and on Tuesday at the McDonald's at 3639 169th St. in Hammond, Indiana.
