Smashing Pumpkins' Billy Corgan, pro wrestlers host fundraiser for Highland Park parade shooting victims
HIGHLAND PARK, Ill (CBS) -- Professional wrestlers teamed up with Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan Thursday night for a fundraiser for the families of the July 4th parade massacre in Highland Park.
It was a packed house at Madame ZuZu's – the tea shop Corgan owns at 1876 1st St. in Highland Park – as professional wrestlers Tyrus and Madusa came to chat. They also signed books and met with fans.
Tyrus – real name George Murdoch – and Madusa – real name Debrah Ann Miceli – are in town for a series of shows with the National Wrestling Alliance.
The event at Madame ZuZu's is a charity event put on by Corgan – a Highland Park resident. The pro-wrestlers and their fans say it is something they wanted to support.
"The vibe of just coming in here and knowing that this is happening for that cause – it's a comfortable feeling, because they know what it's for," said Miceli.
Miceli said wrestlers watch out for one another – and step up.
"It's a different type of family. You look out for each other, and you hear that a lot in some little organizations – but wrestling is pretty amazing," she said.
The money raised will go directly to the Highland Park Community Foundation.
The fundraiser continues on Friday and Saturday. The National Wrestling Alliance will be broadcasting two wrestling shows at Studio One in Highland Park.
