BGA Sues City To Release Video Of Dog Possibly Being Choked To Death
(CBS) -- As WBBM has reported, employees at Chicago Animal Care and Control apparently choked a dog to death in March - and now the Better Government Association is suing the city for not releasing the videotaped evidence of that incident.
The dog was named Spike and Animal Care and Control says he was "large" and "aggressive."
Several employees tried to bring him under control. The city report says he was on two "control poles."
And then Spike collapsed.
The report says the animal control officer "proceeded to drag the dog by his neck down the hallway" and then used the pole to lift Spike by his neck into a cage.
The Better Government Association - in investigating the case - submitted a Freedom of Information Act request for the security video - and has now been denied.
Attorney Matt Topic represents the BGA, and he has filed suit to get a copy of the tape.
"This involves troubling misconduct by taxpayer-funded employees whose job it is to care for animals humanely. And the city wants to public to just accept without question its own account of what happened."
Animal Care and Control suspended three employees. The longest suspension was 20 days for one employee.
WBBM has asked the Chicago law department for comment.
