Bears Trade Up, Take Minnesota Safety Brock Vereen In 4th Round

(CBS) The Chicago Bears selected Minnesota safety Brock Vereen in the fourth round Saturday following a trade with the Denver Broncos.

The Bears acquired the 131st overall pick from the Denver Broncos that was used to pick Vereen along with a seventh-rounder that is No. 246 overall. The Bears traded their fifth-round picks in this draft and 2015 to the Broncos.

Durkin's Breakdown: S Brock Vereen

Vereen is 5-foot-11 1/2 and 199 pounds and plays a position the Bears have a serious need at, so he'll have a chance to compete for early playing time. Vereen played both safety positions at Minnesota, but many view his best fit at free safety.

Vereen ran the 40-yard dash in 4.47 seconds at the NFL Combine, which was the second-fastest time for any safety.

Vereen was a first-team all-Big Ten selection as a senior, recording 59 tackles, 41 solo. He started all 13 games at free safety last fall.
