Euphoria Pervades Wrigleyville As Cubs Earn World Series Appearance
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Police tried to keep the peace around Wrigley Field late Saturday after the Cubs clinched the National League pennant in Game 6 against the Dodgers and earned a trip to the World Series, their first since 1945.
Excited fans pushed down some of the barricades that authorities had erected earlier in the evening in an attempt to control crowds. Crews began unloading barricades from a truck outside the ballpark in the fourth inning of Game 6 of the NLCS as the Cubs edged closer to a historic victory.
Chicago police said they would be ready for celebrations. With their 5-0 defeat of the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Cubs will make their first World Series appearance in 71 years, squaring off against the Indians. Game 1 is Tuesday in Cleveland.
Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel issued a statement on the Cubs' victory:
"Incredible. Absolutely incredible. The Chicago Cubs are National League champions. Across Chicago and around the world generations of Cubs fans, from the very young to the very, very old, are celebrating tonight. Rightfully so. We are witnessing history right before our eyes. Wrigley was rocking all night, and our Cubs just won the pennant. So fly the W Chicago, the fun continues in Cleveland on Tuesday night. Go Cubs!"
