Baffoe: Let's Mock Stupid Reactions To Michael Sam
By Tim Baffoe-
(CBS) Michael Sam is an openly gay athlete. He will likely play in the NFL in 2014. That's a big deal for football, for sports and for society at large.
Some people disagree, though. See, many people are very uncomfortable with the existence of sexualities other than their own, and then they react to news like that of Sam with brilliance to the effect of "Why is this news?" or "I'm fine with it, but why does he have to be in our faces about it?" And of course there is the blatant homophobia with slurs and crude jokes.
It was nice to see that as of this posting no NFL players or coaches had anything dumb to say (that will probably change, though) and took the news as a positive. Sports Illustrated quickly and poorly begged the tone deaf question of how Sam's draft stock will be impacted and got quotes from some league personnel that range from stupid to cowardly in their anonymity. Herm Edwards brought the out-of-touch uncle that can't even say the person's name correctly perspective.
And then there is good ol' social media. Twitter is just the best for bigots really showing their true selves. So I did the unenviable task of culling the online equivalent of that area between your college flophouse couch cushions and found some real pearls of wisdom. Let's point at the bad people, shall we?
Don't really get why it has to be national news that Michael Sam is gay
— sam f (@_SlAMmin) February 10, 2014
Well, he's likely going to be the first member of a long-discriminated-against group of people to play in the NFL. One of the nice things about intelligent society is that it tends to celebrate and deem "newsworthy" stories of breaking down social barriers. So you being obviously uncomfortable with the story doesn't make it less of one.
Imperfections?
We all agree that Michael Sam's teammates are gay if they get in the shower at the same time as him right?
— Vino Teezio (@northphilliest) February 10, 2014
Oh, totally. We are all familiar with the gay-by-association law of nature.
This is the daytime ESPN demographic.
@ArrowheadAddict that's good ol Mizzou for ya. Lol
— Chris Medlock (@cmedlock1) February 10, 2014
HAHA I EQUATE MY DISTASTE FOR A SCHOOL AND SPORTS TEAM WITH HOMOSEXUALITY BECAUSE I BELIEVE THE GAYS IS INFERIOR AND JOKES AND STUFF LOLZ
Why is Michael Sam's story even news? Coming out doesn't make you 'brave', it's just a media glorification of your lifestyle choice.
— Drew Peters MA, CSCS (@drewpeters_vg) February 10, 2014
Take some more very heterosexual bathroom selfies, bro.
Taken out of context. I get what he's saying RT @TMZ: Herm Edwards -- Michael Sam's Gayness is Considered 'Baggage' http://t.co/YjinVMPgMl
— john (@Won_Man_Wonder) February 10, 2014
Nah, the context was pretty clear, and you're glad you found a famous person to validate your passive prejudice.
I CAME HERE FOR PREFERENTIAL TEAM COVERAGE AND TIRED CLICHES WHY ARE THEY GETTING THE GAY ALL OVER IT???
So compromise who you are and be dishonest for the sake of a job? Got it.
@BonnieBernstein they just need to get Michael Sam a different shower and dressing area so other players will feel safe.
— JO aicraG (@oj_garcia) February 10, 2014
This person can't be that stupid, can he?
@ESPN_FirstTake @RealSkipBayless a gay football player is going to be an issue. Macho men of the NFL aren't going to accept him quickly.
— JO aicraG (@oj_garcia) February 10, 2014
Oh, he corresponds with Skip Bayless. Asked and answered.
No hate or dislike for Michael Sam..his sin is no bigger or smaller than mine. But when will following Jesus be as celebrated as this?
— Shawn Ingle (@inglecs12) February 10, 2014
Maybe when you stop using your faith as a vehicle to judge others and to speak for a deity.
Went to get a shower 25 minutes ago. Come back down and they are still talking about Michael Sam. Get over it. Damn
— Bill (@AlexBillingsle1) February 10, 2014
STOP MAKING ME CONFRONT MY OWN ISSUES WITH THIS VERY IMPORTANT NEWS STORY.
Man Michael Sam is such a good person for coming out of the closet. False it's a sin and people are treating it like nothing's wrong
— Decepticonor (@ConorDenson) February 10, 2014
I have my beliefs I mean don't get me wrong, I'm not gonna sit there a judge you for it. It's not my choice so therefor it's not my business
— Decepticonor (@ConorDenson) February 10, 2014
I'm still gonna think it's wrong, but i don't have to right too judge whoever cuz that's not my job.
— Decepticonor (@ConorDenson) February 10, 2014
But you just did, you incredibly clueless person.
Michael Sam is stupid as hell for telling he's gay before the NFL draft
— Juju (@JuliusDjimon) February 10, 2014
Smoking without music is like showering without water just doesn't make sense
— Juju (@JuliusDjimon) February 9, 2014
The? Is. Will whatever team Michael Sam go to. Will his teammates take a Shower when He Does or will They Wait. That's the ?
— Kevin (@Lunch44) February 10, 2014
Not really, no. In fact, I hadn't even thought of that until I saw this tweet because I'm not an ignorant jackass who equates homosexuality with shower issues. And go ask Sam's Mizzou teammates how much of an issue it was.
....Michael Sam's coach has been quoted saying " we should of known, he was the first one in the shower and the last one to leave." #gay
— Aaron (@BurningUrine) February 10, 2014
"Should of."
How dare a man doing something very courageous and greatly impacting the world of sports and beyond be treated as something great.
Just keep telling yourself that overall humanity is getting better and history will prove people like that to be fools. It's what I do. And drink.
