6 people shot, 1 of them killed in Chicago's Back of the Yards neighborhood

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Six men were shot when two people opeend fire Tuesday night in the Back of the Yards neighborhood, and one of them was killed.

At 7:17 p.m., two people came up on Ashland Avenue at 51st Street and began firing shots at the men—who were standing outside. The injuries were as follows:

  • A 46-year-old man died at St. Bernard Hospital after being shot in the left torso.
  • A 51-year-old man was shot in the left foot and was in fair condition at Stroger Hospital of Cook County.
  • A 37-year-old man suffered multiple gunshots to his body and was also in fair condition at Stroger.
  • A 44-year-old man was shot in the left leg and foot and was in critical condition at Stroger.
  • A 46-year-old man was shot in the left foot and was in fair condition at Stroger.
  • A 39-year-old man was shot in the leg and was in good condition at the University of Chicago Medical Center. He was driving by in a car at the time.

The bulk of shell casings could be seen at one corner.

A yellow taco truck was set up at the intersection Tuesday night and ended up right in the middle of the crime scene. The taco truck staffers were serving customers when the shots were fired.

Yolanda Torres said she the floor of the taco truck until the shooting stopped.

"We heard the gunshots and then we just got down inside of here because we got a scare, and I just saw a male running over here on the light," said Torres. "I just saw the gun—he was shooting like a lot of gunshots, like about eight or 10."

Witnesses said they saw at least one person running away from the scene.
