Baby's Remains Found On Dolton Property

(CBS) – The decomposed remains of a baby in a bag were found Wednesday on a homeowner's property in south suburban Dolton, authorities say.

A baby or infant was found within a bag, inside a shed attached to a home along Drexel Avenue, Police Chief Robert Collins told reporters. Details about the baby's age or gender were not available; the remains were conveyed to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office, Collins said.

The incident is being treated as a "suspicious death" investigation.

The home where the body was found is near Riverview Park and about a block from the Little Calumet River. The home owner discovered the bag with the baby inside it and called 9-1-1 around 2 p.m. after smelling a foul odor emanating from an attached shed, Collins said.

"This child should have had a chance. And whatever happened, I can't imagine that it was so terrible that they couldn't have reached out for help," neighbor Ed Creyton said.

Police had a search warrant Wednesday evening and were searching the home, CBS 2's Audrina Bigos reports.
