Attempted robbery ends in shootout on Chicago's North Side

CHICAGO (CBS)-- An attempted robbery ended in a shootout in the Edgewater neighborhood early Tuesday morning. 

Chicago police said a 23-year-old man was walking in the 5400 block of North Winthrop Avenue at 4:22 a.m. when the attempted robber got out of a sedan and demanded his property at gunpoint. 

Police said that's when the victim, who has a FOID card and concealed carry license, and the offender exchanged gunfire. The victim was not injured. 

The offender fled in one of two sedans parked nearby. Police said it's unknown whether the offender was hit. 

No arrests have been made. 

Late Tuesday, police issued a community alert warning that listed the Winthrop Avenue robbery as part of a spree that went on for a little less than an hour early Tuesday morning in Rogers Park, West Rogers Park, and Edgewater.

In each incident, multiple robbers pulled up in vehicles and robbed people at gunpoint. The robbers have fled in a Kia sport-utility vehicle and a Kia sedan.

The Winthrop Avenue robbery was the last in the spree. The others happened at the following times and locations Tuesday morning.

  • 3:30 a.m. in the 2000 Block of West Granville Avenue.
  • 3:55 a.m. in the 6600 Block of North Clark Street.
  • 3:40 a.m. in the 2100 Block of West Lunt Avenue.
  • 4:08 a.m. in the 6100 Block of North Wolcott Avenue.
  • 4:09 a.m. in the 2000 Block of West Farwell Avenue.
  • 4:13 a.m. in the 5900 Block of North Broadway.
  • 4:15 a.m. in the 5400 Block of North Kenmore Avenue.
  • 4:15 a.m. in the 1100 Block of West Balmoral Avenue.
