Arlington Heights Officer Shot Last Month Expected To Fully Recover
ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (STMW) -- A northwest suburban police officer who was shot during a standoff last month is expected to make a full recovery, police said Wednesday.
Arlington Heights police Officer Michael McEvoy, a 20-year veteran of the department, was shot in the "facial" area while responding to a domestic incident in the 1900 block of Windham Court on Dec. 12, police said at the time.
In a statement released Wednesday, police said McEvoy was the first officer on the scene, and was confronted by the gunman and shot in the face. Other officers were able to pull him out of the home, and he was transported to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge in critical condition.
McEvoy remained in the surgical intensive care unit for several weeks, but has now been released from the hospital, police said. He is expected to make a full recovery.
The alleged gunman, 41-year-old Eric M. Anderson of Niles, was holding a woman hostage when police forced their way into the home, authorities said.
Reporters at the scene heard what sounded like three gunshots before the standoff came to a close just before 11 p.m.
Anderson was shot by police and taken to Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights, where he was pronounced dead at 11:02 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office. An autopsy found he died from multiple gunshot wounds and his death was ruled a homicide.
The woman who had been taken hostage was not injured.
