Archbishop Cupich Meets With Pope Francis In Vatican
(CBS) -- Archbishop Blase Cupich had a personal audience with Pope Francis in the Vatican Friday afternoon, the Archdiocese of Chicago announced in a statement.
The meeting took place at Pope Francis' residence, the Domus Sanctae Marthae and is the first meeting between the two.
According to the statement from the Archdiocese, Cupich thanked the pope for receiving him and for appointing him Archbishop of Chicago.
"I also took the opportunity to tell him about the many wonderful things happening in our local Church and assured him of our support for his ministry of unity," Cupich said. "The Pope specifically asked the people in the Archdiocese to pray for him daily and I assured him that I would relay this message."
Cupich is in Rome for the blessing of the pallium -- a thin, lambswool shawl -- given to archbishops of major metropolitan diocese.
The pallium will formally be placed on Cupich's shoulders by the Papal Nuncio Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò at a mass in Chicago on August 23.
