Amtrak train hits vehicle, disrupts Metra Milwaukee District North Line on Chicago's Northwest Side

Metra disrupted after Amtrak train hits car on Chicago's Northwest Side

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Metra trains on the Milwaukee District North line were stopped in both directions late Friday afternoon after a car was hit by an Amtrak train near the Edgebrook station.

The Amtrak train clipped a car on the bumper on the crossing at Central Avenue just south of Devon Avenue. The area near the Edgebrook station is prone to accidents, as there are grade-level crossings in rapid succession at Central, Caldwell, and Devon avenues.

The line was completely shut down as of 5:15 p.m., and trains were stacked up on either side of the line as far as the eye could see.

Signal maintainers and Metra police were on the scene.

The duration of the delay at the Northwest Side station was unknown late Friday.

The Milwaukee District North Line runs from Union Station to northwest suburban Fox Lake.

CHECK: Metra updates

On Thursday afternoon, Metra trains were likewise halted in both directions after an incident involving an Amtrak train, in that case on the BNSF Line in Berwyn. In that incident, the train struck a pedestrian.
