Amtrak On Pace For Normal Operations, But Cancellations Still Loom For Wednesday
CHICAGO (STMW) -- Amtrak is still struggling in its efforts to get service radiating from Chicago Union Station back on track.
Several hundred people waited in line Tuesday afternoon trying to rebook after their trains were canceled. Some were told it may be several days before they can get a train to their destination.
Amtrak again on Wednesday intends to cancel much of its Chicago Hub service. Two of four round-trips between Chicago and St. Louis will be canceled, three of six round trips between Chicago and Milwaukee, one of three round trips between linking Chicago with Detroit and Pontiac, Mich., one of three round trips to and from Carbondale and both round trips to Quincy; one train, stuck for several days, is expected to arrive.
For one couple from Grand Rapids, Mich., Deborah and Dan, the final leg of their vacation trip has been a nightmare. She said they had no problems flying from Costa Rica to Miami, or from Miami to O'Hare. But since then, she said, they've been turned down for a rental car, bumped from a flight and had Amtrak cancel on them.
"We should have stayed there," she said, glumly.
