Among Those Left Homeless By Tornado: The Ogle County Sheriff
(CBS) – A man who is front and center in coordinating recovery efforts in Rochelle was himself a victim of Thursday's devastating tornado.
Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle says his wife and two children were on their way out of town and weren't home when the EF-4 tornado struck. The family dog was home but was in the basement and survived.
Even when his own home was flattened, he said he had no trouble staying focused on the duty at hand: responding to the natural disaster and helping his neighbors and relatives.
"I know it is hard to believe, but I love my job," he told reporters. "I was born and raised in this community, and it's just a privilege to be able to serve them."
VanVickle says he got a call from Woodstock Police, who found some of his mail – 60 miles away.
