Amid State Budget Mess, Deerfield Road Project Will Be Mothballed This Week

(CBS) -- Things are so bad that road crews are actually packing up and leaving job sites because the state cash runs out Thursday.

Among the projects that could come to a screeching halt is work on Deerfield Road in north suburban Deerfield.

Crews are preparing to mothball the work site, officials say. The road is currently a two-laner because of work already completed; it's supposed to be four lanes.

"We should get things in 'safe condition,'" Mayor Harriet Rosenthal says. "Well, it can't be fully safe when you have cones that you have to navigate."

She says no state budget means no money to pay for the 2.5 miles of road improvements.

Neighbor Lisa Hoffman says the road project is a nightmare at peak traffic times.

There could be a budget vote as early as this Wednesday. If that happens, the village says work could continue in about a week.
