American Red Cross hosts blood drive at Brookfield Zoo

Blood drive held at Brookfield Zoo

BROOKFIELD, Ill. (CBS) -- The Brookfield Zoo gave people a chance to have some fun and earn some cash while also saving lives Thursday.

The zoo hosted a blood drive for the American Red Cross.

People who were pre-registered got into the zoo for free and received free parking, a free t-shirt, and a $20 Amazon gift card.

The Red Cross says donations have been way down since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. They currently need more than 13,000 donations a day just to keep up with demand.

Every donation can save up to three lives.

The organization serves around 2,500 hospitals around the country.
