UPDATE: Gary Teen Subject Of AMBER Alert Has Been Found
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A Gary, Ind. teen at the center of an AMBER Alert issued Monday has been found, say authorities, who offered little more information.
Chastinea Reeves, 15, was last seen 2 a.m. Monday after her mother was the victim of a violent crime, Gary police said. State police issued the AMBER Alert as local police said Destinae could be in "extreme danger."
Chastinea was found around 2:30 p.m. in the city Gary, police said. The AMBER Alert has been canceled.
"The investigation is ongoing," Gary Police Lt. Dawn Westerfield told reporters. She declined to offer details.
Police said Chastinea and her four-year-old sister fled to relative Kelli McMillan's home on Main Street in Gary around 2 a.m. Monday, after witnessing a crime.
The teen's mother, Jamie Garnett, was found murdered inside a different Gary apartment Monday morning.
"They said somebody had come in, and did something to the mom. So I stepped out here, I called the police, I called the neighbor of the mom, and when I was making my phonecalls, Chastinea, she went out the back door," McMillan said.
McMillan said Chastinea was "hysterical."
