Amber Alert canceled after 3-year-old girl abducted from Maywood found safe

MAYWOOD, Ill. (CBS) -- An Amber Alert has been canceled, after a three-year-old girl who was abducted in west suburban Maywood was found safe.

But there are many unanswered questions about why the little girl was taken in the first place. As CBS 2's Shardaa Gray reported, police in Maywood said the woman accused of abducting the child is the her own mother, who does not have custody of the girl.

Illinois State Police said the girl was abducted shortly before 10:00 a.m. during a Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) visitation in the 1700 block of South 1st Avenue.

Around 2:30 p.m., Illinois State Police said the girl had been found safe.

According to the Maywood Police Department, an investigation showed that the suspect, her mother was dropped off by a rideshare driver at her home in LaGrange. Authorities from Maywood and LaGrange went to the mother's home, where she was found cuddling the girl in bed.

The 3-year-old was then taken to a nearby hospital for further evaluation. Her mother is in Maywood police custody, and police are investigating how she was able to abduct the girl.

DCFS released this statement to CBS 2:

"The Department of Children and Family Services is extremely grateful for the efforts of law enforcement to quickly find the young girl.  We will continue to offer our support and services to the youth and family. We are reviewing the incident to determine that all protocols were followed."
